Star Time is a track, 4-CD box set by James Brown. Its contents span most of the length of his career up to the time of its release, starting in with his first hit record, "Please, Please, Please", and ending with "Unity", his collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa. Writing in , Robert Christgau described it as "the finest box set ever released as essential a package as the biz has ever hawked, Genre: Soul, funk.

I've owned this 4-CD box for a year or so, but we're going to have a James Brown movie coming out any day now, "Get on Up." The trailers look intense and the production values are terrific. But the important thing will be the music, and capturing James Brown's charismatic and highly artificial performance style/5().

When the four-disc Star Time box was released in , James Brown's catalog sorely needed an overhaul; much of it was out of print, and what was available was hardly befitting of his magnitude. Star Time got everything right: it put Brown's hugely influential career into striking perspective, helping to complete his critical renaissance, and the richness of its music set a standard for box 10/

Sep 28,  · The newer FP mastering is more in-your-face, and it's heavier and harder on the ears than the "Star Time" set. I definitely found the box set to be a much more pleasurable listening experience. Now that I have a better set of speakers, I'm finding it easier to tell which CD's are great and which ones are great for target practice.
